Repairing Damaged Corian Tops - What Can And Can’t Be Fixed

Corian tops are known for their durability and resistance to scratches, stains, and heat. However, like any material, they can still get damaged over time. Most damages on Corian tops can be repaired, though there are certain limitations to what can and cannot be fixed.

In this article, we’ll discuss the common types of damages that can occur on a Corian top and how they can be repaired.

Surface scratches can fade away:

Light scratches from cutting or cleaning sit on the top layer. These are easy to fix. Sanding with fine paper and water lifts them out. Deeper scratches need more work but still repair well. The material runs all the way through. You can sand down to fresh surface and the color stays the same. Scratches almost always can be fixed.

Burns depend on depth:

A white heat mark from a warm pan usually sands right off. Dark burns that char the material are different. If the burn sits on top sanding removes it. If the burn goes deep the damaged area must be cut out. This is still fixable. A burn that has spread or bubbled wide may need a full insert patch. Most burns can be fixed.

Chips and dings are fixable:

A chip missing from an edge or corner looks bad but repairs well. Filler paste matches the original. A skilled hand shapes the new material to blend in. Small chips disappear. Even larger edge damage can be rebuilt. Chips are almost always repairable.

Cracks have limits:

A hairline crack with no movement can be fused from underneath. Glue pulls it tight and sanding hides the line. But a crack that runs across the whole top or keeps coming back is a sign of stress. If the base underneath has shifted the crack will reopen. Some cracks can be fixed. Some mean the top needs replacement.

Water damage near sinks:

Water sitting on the surface for years can seep into tiny cuts. The material swells or darkens. Light water marks sand out. Deep swelling that has softened the material cannot be fixed. Once the structure breaks down the damaged section must be cut away. If the whole sink area is soft a new top may be necessary.
